Secretary desk
Germany, ca. 1740
Wood inlaid with ivory, brass mounts. A secretary-style desk with opulent ivory inlay depicting figurative scenes and decorative ornamentation. Inscription on the hinged desktop: “Omnis home mendax, natura ac arte poeta”. Cupids play harps and lutes in the round medallions at the four corners. Two lovers are seated in the centre of the desktop. To their left is an oval coat of arms surmounted by two horns in the crest; to their right, Eros in profile from the left is kneeling on his left knee and his right hand is touching the back of an oval coat of arms bearing a rosette.
